Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Russia’s interference in the Brexit vote and the U.S. elections – these are some of the challenges modern democracies are facing these days. The effectiveness of democracy is still up for debate, but one key factor is the investment in mechanisms and institutions. The role of values and institutions we build today is critical. During times of war and crises such as pandemics, how can democratic values and principles be adapted? How should national governments and the international community navigate through these threats and changes? This article aims to address these important questions.
