Dear readers, 2025 witnessed an increase in authoritarianism worldwide. Even long-standing democratic states appeared unprepared for the attempts to monopolise power, while others with a history of undemocratic rule gained momentum and increased their influence. Our authors analyse different cases around the globe and what democracies can do to respond to this trend.
